End the Genocide in Darfur.-

Dear President Bush:

I urge you to back up your strong words about the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan with action to end the genocide. While your administration has taken the lead in denouncing the genocide in Sudan, stronger action is needed. We urge you and Congress to support the rapid deployment of the hybrid UN-AU peacekeeping force to protect civilians - now.

The 'dirty deal' that the United States has struck with the architects of genocide in Sudan must end: we should not watch a genocide unfold and permit governments to terrorize and kill their own populations in exchange for counterterrorism intelligence of dubious quality.

I am opposed to any U.S. policy that fails to hold the architects of genocide responsible for their horrific crimes because high-ranking Sudanese government officials are "allies" in the war on terror, providing counter-terrorism intelligence information. Instead, the people of Darfur need a peace accord like one struck by the Sudanese government with rebels in Southern Darfur - a peace accord that ensures the government will not be able to continue terrorizing, killing, and raping Darfurians. We demand a just peace accord for Darfur and a robust hybrid UN-AU peacekeeping effort to keep that peace.

I thank you for your leadership in passing the United Nations Security Council Resolutions that elevate pressure on the Sudanese Government through sanctions and the threat of prosecution by the International Criminal Court.

But much more needs to be done immediately. I implore you to take whatever steps necessary to:

- Send a high-level envoy to broker a just peace accord between the Sudanese government and rebels;

- Support the rapid deployment of the hybrid UN-AU peacekeeping effort in Darfur

- Increase pressure on the Sudanese government through economic sanctions, including a ban on oil exports until the crisis is solved;

President Bush, this genocide was neither random nor inevitable-it was the deliberate, systematic plan of a regime that intends to "change the demography of Darfur" - and the terror it has inflicted on civilians in Darfur can be stopped, with your decisive action.

Sincerely,

Kyr José M. IIIº O.S+G Mosquera y C. de Septimio-Bathzabbay el Tadmur
