During the 20 years of the Sudanese civil war between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/ Army, which ended in January 2005, conflict, raids and abductions in the Southern part of the country were carried out by various militia groups, leading to the enslavement of approximately 14,000 men, women and children. Despite some efforts by government and civil society, the majority of those abducted remain in slavery today, along with thousands more children born to them while in captivity.

Dear Madam Speaker
.
I am writing to you in your capacity as Speaker of the House, concerning the continuing plight of thousands of people in slavery in Sudan.
.
As I am sure you are aware, approximately 14,000 people were abducted into slavery during the 20 year civil war between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army, which ended in January 2005. Despite the creation of the Committee for the Eradication of the Abduction of Women and Children (CEAWC), and the efforts of civil society groups such as the Dinka Committee, many thousands remain in slavery today.
.
I welcome the measures which the Government has undertaken to date, but am gravely concerned about the situation of those thousands of people who remain in slavery in Sudan. The US Congress is in crucial position to put international pressure on Sudan to tackle this issue.
.
I would ask you to call on Sudan to address the following points in particular:
.
- Support needs to be provided to the Committee for the Eradication of the Abduction of Women and Children and the Dinka Committee to enable them to return those abducted to their villages, families and relatives.
.
- Projects should be established to rehabilitate and reintegrate the abductees into their original local communities as well as the provision of the essential services to meet their needs.
.
- Every effort must be made to prevent a recurrence of such practices in other areas of Sudan, particularly in Darfur.
.
Thank you for your attention.
