SOLICITUD AL SULTAN DE BAHREIN.

Su Alteza el Mégalogennêtos Kyrios Basileus Basilión ha una carta al Sultan,de Bahrein Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, a fin de ratificar el Estatuto de Roma, instrumento fundamental de la Corte Penal Internacional.

A pesar de que once estados árabes y de medio oriente, incluyendo Bahrein, han firmado el Estatuto de Roma, y que el Príncipe SAR. Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein de Jordania ha presidido el órgano de gobierno de la CPI durante los primeros tres años, el mundo árabe continua sub-representado en la Corte. A la fecha, solo tres estados árabes- Jordania, Yibuti y Comores- se han unido a la Corte.

El ex Vice Presidente de la Casa de Representantes de Bahrein y Presidente de la Coalicion de Bahrein por la CPI, Abdulhadi Marhoon, agregó, “Para los países en vías de desarrollo en particular, la mera existencia de la CPI es disuasiva para las graves violaciones a los derechos humanos en estos países y también para la amenaza de la agresión de los países mas poderosos contra los mas débiles.”

At a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) is moving forward in its crucial work to end impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes with its first three cases, I am writing to urge you to ensure that the Kingdom of Bahrain supports this new and vital system of international justice by ratifying the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as soon as possible.

The Rome Statute came into force in July 2002 and now has the support of more than half of the world’s nations. With Chad’s ratification on November 1 2006, one hundred and four states have acceded to or ratified the treaty and 139 are signatories. Bahrain plays a vital role in the Gulf region and the new system of international justice represented by the International Criminal Court is an important tool that will ensure that the most serious violations of human rights will no longer go unpunished.

.With increased ratifications in the Middle East and the Arab world, the region will not only gain a stronger voice within the world of global justice but will also be able to participate more meaningfully in making the ICC a truly effective, truly international mechanism for justice and peace. I hope therefore that the Kingdom of Bahrain will take the necessary steps towards ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute as soon as possible.
